Seale Moorer's life|ware product makes home automation more accessible, affordable, and sophisticated.

Stretching out on the comfortable, wood-trimmed, beige sofa in the hearth room of the Woodland Hall house, it's hard not to get a glimmer of what omnipotence feels like. A few deft touches on a life|point 12.1-inch touchscreen controller transport you throughout this 12,000-square-foot contemporary home in the Columbus, Ohio, suburb of Westerville. The HP 50-inch plasma in the imposing walnut armoire is one of 15 displays throughout the year-old home that can monitor any of the residence's 36 audio zones, 120 DSC Maxsys security zones with 22 cameras, 19 distinct HVAC climates, and 295 Insteon and Vantage lighting zones. After a few minutes of virtually roaming and commanding the architectural equivalent of the USS Enterprise, you could be forgiven for thinking, "What, there are only three Xbox 360s?"

New Company Intros Front Projection Screens, Frames, and Masking Systems

SmX Cinema Solutions Corporation is introducing a line of high-end acoustically transparent front-projection screens for home theater installations. The new company has developed a proprietary woven screen material called CineWeave HD, which it claims provides positive picture gain, lack of reflective artifacts, wide-viewing angle, acoustic transparency, and color neutrality. Additionally, SmX says CineWeave HD screens are guaranteed to produce moiré-free video with either digital or non-digital projectors when used with the company's patent-pending frame systems.

High-end speaker maker Burmester, US introduced a trio of slim speakers at CEDIA. All three speakers – the B30, B25, and B20 – are three-way, full-range, floorstanding models. Each uses a new air motion transformer (with a frequency range of 2,700 – 45,000 Hz) that's mounted in a small horn. This high-frequency driver design is said to be highly efficient and highly dynamic. The speakers also share a similarly engineered side-firing oval woofer with a powerful Ferrite magnet system. The oval shape helps maximize the cone's surface area while making it possible to construct a narrow speaker cabinet.

NAD says the new T 175 Preamp-Tuner-Processor is designed with a "more intuitive, less intimidating user interface than is typically seen today." In keeping with the simplicity aspect, the T 175 includes a modular layout that places key circuitry on five independent and removable boards which makes the unit easier to service or upgrade. The T 175 also includes four HDMI 1.3 inputs; Audyssey Auto Set-Up and Calibration; MultEQ XT Room Correction; as well as Audyssey MultEQ XT Pro, a technology that allows installers to calibrate acoustical output using a laptop computer.

Epson, Atlantic Put It All Together

Home theater is the integration of big-screen television and surround sound. But how often do you see the two product categories integrated with each other? That's what makes a new system from Atlantic Technology and Epson so special.

The Ensemble 1080 triple-LCD projector comes in a cradle that also includes two full-range rear-surround speakers. Three front speakers are built into the housing for the 100-inch retractable screen, their horn-loaded tweeters and 4.5-inch woofers aimed downward toward the listening position. There is also a separate 10-inch subwoofer, which contains amplification for the whole system, and a sleek controller, which serves as both preamp-processor and DVD drive.

At a demo in New York, Ensemble actually sounded good! Pricing will be $4999 for the 720p version and $6999 for the 1080p version. The system will be sold exclusively through a/v specialty dealers and custom installers.
